The ant-farm owner’s manual said that ants are democratic. When little Tom excitedly read from the amazing facts about his new ant farm aloud, grandfather said “that must be why your mother let you buy them,” and smugly grinned at his appraisal.
The ant farm sat on the television in the family living room, the ants piled their dirt over the green plastic farmhouse, plow, barn, and other human symbols of farming. The tiny ants cooperated and dug through their sealed two dimensional environment, unaware of human abstractions about politics.
Tom would later recall that day, now knowing the difference between democracy and the Democratic Party, and furthermore that his mother was a republican.
